Well, hello, ModernSportsman and welcome to the new year; a year that I hope will be filled with loads of outdoor fun and adventure for us all. Just as our time in the woods and on the waterways promises a great time so we hope your visits with us will give you almost as much pleasure. So with out further ado, let's see what we have in store for you in this first issue of our Home Page for the year. Our first article comes from a consummate professional; Greg Keefer has become more than just a regular contributor. Greg now writes a monthly feature for us where he shares his incredible knowledge of a wide array of hunting and fishing venues. This month Greg has written an article showcasing the matchless goose hunting opportunities to be found in the central flyway state of Arkansas. As he usually does, Greg has done the leg work and research necessary to give you a list of all the goose hunting hot spots to be found in this great sportsman's state. Greg not only lists the better goose hunting areas but also all the contact information that would be so helpful to a visitor. If you have ever wanted to try goose hunting in a central flyway goose Mecca like Arkansas then Greg Keefer's "The Natural State of Geese" is a must read. As you know we have had a reprint feature on all of our articles. Ever since the beginning of our website when ever a member has wanted to read a past article from our archives all they have to do is send me an email requesting the article by name and I will send it out to the member by whatever means they request. Ever since we started this feature, one article has been requested more than any other; in fact it is more than twice as much as any other. This article is titled "An Explosive Adventure by Mike Baines". In May, 2004, Mike Baines wrote an article in which he describes his visit to a curiously English institution; it is the Birmingham Proof House. A proof house is a government run establishment that "Proofs" or tests firearms to see if they are capable of withstanding the pressures necessary for safe operation. First established in 1813, the Birmingham Proof House is the second incarnation of the original Proof House that was built 1637. This combination laboratory museum is a must see for anyone with a deep interest in firearms. Mike's detailed first person style makes you feel you are right there along side him as he goes deep into the workings of this first ever consumer protection agency. His photos further illustrate the more interesting aspects of the house including a fully working pair of miniature Purdey's shotguns that were presented to King George V on his silver jubilee. These diminutive firearms measure a tiny seven inches in length and actually fire a hand made half inch long shotgun shell. A note of caution here, make sure you have some time to spare when you start reading this article, because once you start you will not stop until you've read it at least once Last but certainly not least is an article that I greatly enjoyed reading; if you know anything about me you know nothing makes me happier than the thought of kids being taught and engaging in our much beloved outdoor sports so whenever an opportunity presents itself to publish a story about young people in the field I jump at the chance. However what makes this one even better, from my point of view, is it is written by someone from our ModernSportsman.com family. If you are a regular reader of our articles and forum posts you know our Administrator, Big John Knight, is a consummate outdoorsman whose love of the outdoors is matched by his son Jacob. Jacob's previous adventures have appeared here in the past written by his understandably proud father. However this time around Jacob decided he would tell the story himself so it pleases me no end to present to you "My Eight Pointer" by Jacob Knight. So that is it, another issue of ModernSportsman.com. The home page magazine is ready for your examination; we hope you get as much enjoyment reading this issue as we did presenting to you. We will be back here again in two months with the spring issue but until then please stay safe and be a good ambassador for our sport and please help pass on our outdoor heritage whenever you go to woods, field or stream and don't' forget to take a child with you. Tight Lines & Happy Trails
