We couldn't make the opener yesterday....but got one treed in the evening!
We were a bit late this morning and the birds were on the ground. After several yards of belly crawling this morning The Tom was convinced my calling was good enough to give my hunting partner a look.
WHABAM!
A nice Tom wan on the ground!
21 pounds 9 1/2 inch beard 3/4" spurs!

It's nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice!

I still haven't been out, but Miss Jo and I saw 5 Toms last night on Woodrow Station road, strutting all the way to the roost for 4 very disinterested hens. It was great to watch the show.
Nice bird Phil, now if you could just get quails to come to your calls you wouldn't need a dog!

We stalked 4 more sets of birds about an hour later.... just couldn't get close enough for a shot.
Tried again last evening.... a storm front blew in and temps changed 25 degrees with 40 mph winds.... couldn't find one or even get an answer.....go figure.
The weekend should bring better weather.
We have a few good sized quail covies on our place Mary. I'm getting pretty good at calling them too! I Gave up hunting them years ago though, they are disappearing to fast around here.

Phil, you better watch it boy, your red neck is beginning to show...LOL!
Scott just came in and said "Mary look out your window", sure enough a huge Tom was crossing Miss Jo's field going to where I know a lone hen is nesting, and I'm betting it's the one we named "Blabbermouth". Grabbed the camera and am not sure the pictures turned out, dang leg slows me down too much.
Phil our quail are disappearing or actually gone, with the fire ants the quails just left, or being unable to sit long enough to hatch due to the ants, they have just died out.
